Apparently the news that Lauren Conrad is leaving “The Hills” has left thousands of teenage girls and boys around the country in a state of mourning. In just four years, LC has gone from the seaside resort town of Laguna Beach to becoming an international sensation as the star of MTV’s hit show “The Hills.” And whether or not you watch the show, it’s almost impossible to find someone who hasn’t at least heard the names LC, Heidi, Spencer and Audrina.Well, it’s official — after five whole seasons, “Hills” centerpiece Lauren Conrad will be replaced by frienemy Kristin Cavallari — prompting mixed reactions from fans all over the world. So today I stepped just outside the building into Times Square to ask “Hills” fans exactly what they thought of Lauren leaving, her new replacement Kristin, and if they think the show will be better or worse without LC.It wasn’t hard to find die-hard “Hills” fans — in fact, it was really easy. From Kentucky, Florida, New York and London — we had people lining up to comment on the show and, judging by those we spoke to, LC is going to be missed. Hers are some big shoes to fill. But let me put you all at ease — one thing everyone should know is that the producers and team behind the show know exactly what they are doing and, most importantly, they know exactly what fans of “The Hills” want: drama! So don’t sleep on Kristin Cavallari just yet — something tells me it’s going to be an interesting season

'NCIS': Who's not coming home?!
NCIS DVD First things first: I'm a fan of goofy Tony and his plethora of pop culture references, but when he slid into that seat opposite Michael Rivkin last night -- after translating Ziva's phone conversation with him to track them to a restaurant, then calling her back to the office to get her to leave their table -- it was the first time I ever remember chanting "Ton-y! To-ny! To-ny!" It's nice to be reminded every once in a while why he's the senior field agent. And, of course, how good he looks in a suit. That final scene of Tony and Rivkin in Ziva's apartment, embedded below, practically made me wet myself. Pretty sure the post-commercial teaser shot of Tony on the ground, weapon drawn, was the best one ever. You didn't want it to be Tony, and yet you totally wanted it to be Tony. Him killing Rivkin must have been that "almost unforgivable" thing Cote de Pablo told us Tony would do to Ziva...From the trailer for next week's season finale, embedded after the jump, we know she wasn't lying when she said that Ziva holds a gun to Tony. My heartrate just picked up thinking about it -- that's good TV.Now we can address the question in the headline and in the season finale promo: Who's not coming back from the trip to Israel? We're supposed to think it's Ziva, and maybe it will be -- exec producer Shane Brennan isn't afraid to divide the team, which we learned in last season's finale. He's told us that this story arc carries through to the season 7 premiere, so expect a cliffhanger. (I'm thinking it will turn out to be Director Vance who stays behind for that assignment discussed at the intelligence summit...Any chance Ziva has been working an assignment for Vance that she wasn't allowed to tell Gibbs about, like when Tony had to date the Frog's daughter for Jenny?)P.S. Why didn't Gibbs reveal that it was Ziva who killed Ari and not him? Because when someone's loyalty is being questioned, you don't want to bring up that she turned on her half-brother, even if he was evil (but hot)? NCIS DVD

Mega Minute: Can Lost's Jacob Be Killed? Plus 24, Cold Case
As 24 stages another enjoyable showdown 'tween warring computer wonks Chloe and Janice, the question looms: Might Janeane Garofalo be kept around for next season? I've got Mary Lynn Rajskub's take on her real-life gal pal's possible encore.
? If Cold Case DVD gets picked up for seventh season, what new ordeals await Lilly Rush? Kathryn Morris shares a sneak peek.
? And as Lost's two-hour season-ender nears, I have to wonder: Can Jacob even be killed, as Locke aspires to do? Michael Emerson shares his qualified (and always-entertaining) two cents. Cold Case DVD

NCIS Preview: "You Are Witnessing the Calm Before the Storm"
There are just two episodes to go in this season of CBS' NCIS DVD, and playing a sizable role in them is Michael Rivkin, the Mossad agent who last week surfaced in bed alongside Ziva. This Tuesday, Tony finally gets some quality face time with Rivkin, and it's unlikely either gent will be smiling. Merik Tadros, who plays Rivkin, shared a look at what's to come.TVGuide.com: So, the elusive Michael Rivkin is now among us....Merik Tadros: [Laughs] Yes, apparently so.TVGuide.com: Did they tell you, back during [the Season 6 premiere] "Last Man Standing," that they had plans for you to return, but that you'd have to sit tight?Tadros: The way they set it up, I figured I would make some sort of comeback at one point, but I never knew when it was going to be. I had no idea.TVGuide.com: You have not exactly endeared yourself to fans landing in bed with Ziva.Tadros: Yeah, I had a sense that people would probably be angry about that. They're very passionate about the potential love for DiNozzo and David. I'm just doing my job!TVGuide.com: How is Cote de Pablo as a scene partner?Tadros: Oh, she's amazing. She's a sweetheart and an amazing actress.... It was very, very easy to have to be in love with her.TVGuide.com: Do things get intense in these last two episodes?Tadros: It gets pretty intense, without question. And it was very exciting, because I felt like it shed light on DiNozzo and David in a way that has never before done in the show. It was nice to be a part of that.TVGuide.com: What's the mood when Tony and Rivkin finally come face to face? Do they "mark their territory"?Tadros: I would assume so, yes.TVGuide.com: Shane Brennan told me that Rivkin would "cause some waves." Is the surf going to get only rougher before it calms down?Tadros: You guys right now are witnessing the calm before the storm. NCIS DVDTVGuide.com: At the end of the day, will Rivkin's presence bring Tony and Ziva closer together, or drive them apart?Tadros: I think that love can hurt and heal. In this case, we'll have opportunity to see both of those things take place. I don't want to say too much, but... I think it will only make their connection stronger, as they learn a lot more about each other.TVGuide.com: One theory being batted around is that whatever is going on "between" Rivkin and Ziva is an "arranged" thing that she's trapped in.Tadros: Well, with the underworld of espionage, you would never really know. They could easily have been paired and had to be in love and then had to learn to love each other.... The way I've always approached it is that Rivkin loves Ziva. They've always wanted to add some suspense and mystery to all of it, but I would always say to the directors, "How could I not love her?" But he also has a job to do. And so does she. [Executive producer] Shane [Brennan] is a genius, so it's been a great pleasure to just go along for this ride. I'm excited to watch the finale [airing May 19] myself just to see how it all plays out! NCIS DVD

NCIS: Cote de Pablo Talks Tiva
A lot of NCIS dvd fans are probably expecting fireworks between Ziva (Cote de Pablo) and Tony (Michael Weatherly). After all, the two have amazing chemistry and the promo for last night's episode said Tony would be forced to question Ziva's loyalty to NCIS dvd after discovering a connection between her and Michael Rivkin. In an interview, de Pablo tells Entertainment Weekly that things are about to get intense all the way to the May 19 finale."We could not be farther away from kissing," de Pablo says. "I'm telling you, it's not 'I hate you' anger; it's 'I want to kill you' anger. Like, 'I want to shoot you in the head, but instead I'm gonna put my gun on your knee' anger.... He does something to her that is almost unforgivable. However, the reason he does it is because he truly believes it's going to help her. Little does he know that he almost kills her."Tony and Rivkin, if the promos are to be believed, are set to meet face-to-face in the next episode called "Semper Fidelis." The finale, meanwhile, will feature Ziva's return to Israel and her non-so-happy reunion with the powerful head of Mossad, which also happens to be her father. For her part, de Pablo says her connection with Weatherly was unmistakable even from the day of the audition for NCIS dvd"We sort of hated each other immediately, and loved each other immediately. I walked into the audition and he thought, 'Oh my God, she's gonna be so hard to work with. She's so complicated.' And I thought, 'This guy's so incredibly unprofessional.' He totally went off script and started improvising ... That relationship was established the moment that we met. Nothing changed, it was just enhanced. And we loved each other as well. We realized we're so drastically different and so much alike that there was an immediate attraction."

Karl Urban fleshes out a younger Bones in 'Star Trek'
For several years now, New Zealand-born Karl Urban has been the guy filmmakers turned to if a character had to ride a horse, chuck a spear or run through the forest primeval in a breechcloth. In the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy he was Eomer , one of the riders of Rohan. In “Pathfinder” he played Ghost, a warrior of an Indian tribe battling Viking maraudersBut in director J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek,” opening Friday, the 36-year-old Urban gets to do something else entirely. He gets to be funny.More than that, he gets to portray a younger version of a character that every student of pop culture knows intimately: Dr. Leonard “Bones dvd” McCoy, the often-acerbic ship’s surgeon on the Enterprise.“This was a fantastic opportunity for me,” Urban said in a recent phone call from Hollywood. “I’m so grateful to J.J. for the opportunity to do a character so fundamentally different from anything I’ve done in such a long time. You certainly can’t call Bones McCoy an action hero.“The other thing that makes this so great is that I’m a long-term fan of the TV show. As a kid in New Zealand I would religiously be in front of the set every Saturday morning when ‘Star Trek’ came on.”In the new film Urban looks and behaves uncannily like the late DeForest Kelley, who played McCoy on the series and in several big-screen incarnations.“J.J. set forth a mandate that it was up to each of us in the cast to decide what aspects of these established characters we wanted to bring to the younger versions of them.“I tried to approach that not as an actor but as a fan ... if I wasn’t in this movie and was just somebody going to see it, how much continuity would I want with these characters that I grew up knowing and loving?“I decided I’d want a lot of continuity. My job was to identify the spirit and essence of what Mr. Kelley had done for 40 years and filter it through myself. The challenge was to not only honor that legacy, but to continue to explore it with a fresh eye.”Given the roars of audience approval that greeted Urban’s Bone-sian delivery of classic McCoy eruptions at a recent screening of “Star Trek” ("Dammit, I’m a doctor, not a physicist!"), it appears that Urban pulled it off. NCIS DVD“I read one reviewer who put forth the opinion that the most engaging parts of the movie are the character beats between the moments of sci-fi spectacle.“Which is fantastic, because that was always the inherent strength of ‘Star Trek’ — it was a character-driven show. You might forget about individual stories, but not the characters. They’re the glue. You engage with them and care about them. Disney 100 Years of Magic dvd

'NCIS' Spin-off Looks Stable
Tonight will mark the second part of the NCIS two-part special that launches and judging from initial reviews of the first one and the relevant ratings, the spin-off continues to look like a sure thing. The first part last week reeled in 16.32 million viewers; a figure which saw a seven percent drop, but still considerably enough reason to extend the procedural to the shores of Los Angeles.According to the CBS press release on the episode, the appearance of Mossad agent Michael Riykin (Merik Tadros) has Tony (Michael Weatherly) questioning Ziva's (Cote de Pablo) loyalty to NCIS dvd. Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Special Agent Callen (Chris O'Donnell) goes undercover to try to catch a terrorist cell while OSP psychologist Nate Getz (Peter Cambor) discovers the startling truth about Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and Special Agent Lara Macy's (Louis Lombard) relationshipsWe previously reported that NCIS dvd executive producer Shane Brennan summed up the spin-off as "No forensics. No autopsies. And no Abby." And he cautioned that while the spin-off will be set in an environment that is recognizably NCIS, it won't be a carbon copy of it."The agent lies to them, wins their confidence and ultimately betrays them. There's a big emotional cost for the agents when they do that - it's kind of a Stockholm Syndrome effect."Critics point out that NCIS dvd is taking a page from the CSI playbook, having launched successful spin-offs in Miami and New York. In fact, NCIS dvd itself is a spin-off of JAG, which used to be hugely successful.

Todd Smith Still Cool With Sears, NCIS
While reports issued last week have called for the demise of LL Cool J's affordable line of clothing through Sears, a spokeswoman says the retailer still loves the current NCIS dvd actor.LL Cool J, aka Todd Smith, launched the line of apparel last fall stating: "It feels really good in this economic climate for me as not only an artist, but as a businessman to be able to present something to America that I know will make things a little easier for people."Since its debut in stores, LL Cool J's line has been joined by several celebrity affiliated apparel and fragrance products including Andre Benjamin's "Benjamin Bixby" but, like other items for sale at retail, each line has been effected by troubling economic conditions.Contrary to reports that his line is being pulled due to "poor sales," a Sears spokesperson told Wooha.com that it values its partnership with the former "Phenomenon" rapper/actor."Sears values its partnership with LL Cool J and will continue its commitment to providing the LL Cool J collection to its customers, both in-store and online. The collection is characterized as affordable, iconic apparel for the family and represents an important breakout brand in Sears’ wide assortment of tees, denim and hoodies."In related news, LL Cool J's will appear on NCIS' dvd "Legend Conclusion" episode Tuesday,

NCIS' Final Four: Chris O'Donnell, LL Cool & More
The much-talked about final four episodes are finally upon us, and for fans of CBS' kooky clan of Naval criminal investigators on NCIS dvd, that means we get to see the backdoor episode to the planned spinoff featuring Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J.Chris and LL show up in tonight's episode, "Legend Part 1," and in next Tuesday's "Legend Part 2." But contrary to published reports, the spinoff—which has yet to be picked up (wait for after the May 20 CBS Upfronts in New York for that)—is not titled NCIS dvd: Legend, according to show runner Shane Brennan. We caught up with Shane to give us the lowdown on what's in store for these explosive last episodes of the season and what the spinoff is all about...Ziva's Wild Ride: "It's an emotional rollercoaster for Ziva [Officer Ziva David, played by Cote de Pablo], but it's also physical. It's the most physical she's been, and Cote does all her own stunts. It gets very intense, and Ziva's character is taken right to the edge emotionally in these last four episodes. She is in extreme jeopardy, and no one can help her. It's the nature of the work she does. Basically, Ziva's loyalties are tested, and she is forced to make some life-changing choices, both professionally and emotionally."Tony's Tragic Tale: "[Michael Weatherly's Special Agent Tony DiNozzo] has his own set of problems in these last four episodes. Tragic things happen to Tony and Ziva together, and to them separately as well. It definitely does not end up OK for either Tony or Ziva."Michael Rifkin's Return: "Michael Rifkin [Merik Tadros] was set up in the first episode this season in the Moroccan bar. He didn't utter a word. Then we revisited him twice with photos and phone calls. On [tonight's] episode, he arrives on the scene, and he definitely speaks. He's handsome, charming and dangerous. And he's also clearly someone Ziva really cares for."Jaime Murray's Role: "She comes in the second-to-last episode of the year. She's a strikingly attractive woman, and she causes some jealousy, but not between the people you think. Let me say that Abby [Pauley Perrette] gets jealous in that episode."Legend's Meaning: "Legend is a word coined by the East German secret police, the Stasi, and it means deep background. If you're going undercover, you need to have a legend, a backstory that holds up under scrutiny. The new show, which takes place in Los Angeles, takes a look at what it's like to be an undercover agent. That is, how it differs from NCIS dvd. No one from NCIS dvd is moving over to this new show. We'll announce the spinoff title when the show gets picked up."Chris O'Donnell's Character: "Chris plays Special Agent Callen, who has worked undercover for CIA, FBI and DEA, and he's been fired by all of the agencies. He's very good at what he does, but he doesn't like to be told how to do his job. And he's found a home here because Louise Lombard [who plays Special Agent Lara Macy] understands his value and his worth, and she knows he can be a loose cannon, but is willing to work with him." (Fun fact: Callen speaks Russian.)LL Cool J's Character: "LL plays Special Agent Sam Hanna, the only married member of the team. Sam is married with four kids and is a former Navy SEAL. He's very close with Callen; he's like his big brother, and he looks out for him and protects him. He's a wiser guy—an older guy with a different perspective on the world."Louise Lombard's Character: "We set up straight away that there is tension between Louise's character, Lara Macy, and Special Agent Jethro Gibbs [Mark Harmon]. You will go, 'Oh my God' and you'll get goose bumps. There is an emotional connection between the two of them that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. We learn more about Gibbs through Macy. They go back 18 years. I'm not going to eliminate romance and not going to confirm romance. They could've worked together."NCIS' May 19 Finale: "These four episodes are really four finales in a row. Everything is designed for the fifth episode in this arc, which is the first episode of next season. Over the summer, people are going to wring their hands and wonder what's going to happen. The first episode next season will be unexpected. People's expectations of what they see in the first 30 seconds will be stood on their head."

Bones' Star Confirms Finale Romp
If there were any doubts as to whether or not Bones dvd(Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) will finally do it on the May 14 finale, Deschanel tells E! Online that the big romp, four seasons in the making, will finally happen."It should be surprising and good. The way it happens is surprising," she says.Yet before fans of the Bones-Booth tandem can jump for joy, Deschanel previously cautioned that this does not necessarily mean the two will end up as a couple. For one, Booth doesn't seem too keen on doing it just for procreation. Going forward, she thinks that Booth doesn't feel comfortable "just donating his sperm and not being part of the baby's life."Does this mean the central couple of the hit Fox procedural will couple up just for the sake of the baby? For her part, though, Brennan has a tendency to see it as merely a "transaction.""There's some twists and turns in the episode that will kind of throw a wrench into things, you'll see," she assures. Now for the Bones fans who are wondering why it took this long for the romance to be consummated, Deschanel says it will be worth it."I'm glad we waited this long. I think [creator and writer] Hart [Hanson] wanted to find a clever way to put them together that wouldn't forever taint everything on the show, and I think he figured a very clever way to do it."In other Bones dvd finale news, Grammy-nominated rock band Motley Crue is set to appear on the May 14 episode. The hard-living rock stars will perform in The Lab, a popular nightclub where a murdered body is discovered. USA Today reports that the Los Angeles-based band will interact with Brennan, Booth, and the other cast members.bones dvd

Two-parter lets fans meet new NCIS team
As an NCIS dvd fan, LL Cool J knows what needs to be retained for a spinoff to succeed."The chemistry between the characters is incredible: the banter, the way they've developed over the years," says the rapper/actor. "That is probably the best thing about the show."MORE: 'NCIS dvd' spinoff could ride on original series' coattailsChris O'Donnell, LL Cool J and the rest of the NCIS dvd Office of Special Projects (OSP) team will get their chance to impress viewers in two episodes (CBS, tonight and May 5, 8 p.m. ET/PT) that could result in a new series.LL Cool J says it was great to work with Harmon, and he appreciates this opportunity. "That's part of what makes him unique; (he can) slip into so many different roles."The two report to special agent Lara Macy (Louise Lombard), with another agent (Daniela Ruah) and a psychologist (Peter Cambor) rounding out the team. "Gibbs isn't particularly happy to be working with Macy. They have some history," Brennan says. "People will find out something new about Gibbs."The two hours, besides introducing the new team, figure significantly in the season's conclusion, Brennan says.Fans will see the return of Michael Rivkin (Merik Tadros), a mysterious Mossad agent with ties to Ziva (Cote de Pablo), and they need to watch the episodes "if they want to see what happens to Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva." Their relationship, which has been heating up this season, is at the core of the final episodes, Brennan says. Rivkin's return "causes friction between Tony and Ziva. He has an integral part in the last four episodes."

Television
Mike HaleTo think it all started with “JAG.” That steady performer (10 seasons, 227 episodes) begat “NCIS dvd” (6 seasons, 134 episodes and counting), which is now, CBS willing, about to spin off a third series, tentatively titled “NCIS: Legend.” It’s being set up by a two-part episode of “NCIS dvd” beginning this week (8 p.m. Tuesday) that takes the Naval Criminal Investigative Service team led by Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) to Los Angeles, where the famously uncooperative Gibbs must work with the local office to solve the murder of a Marine. The guest cast — all presumably auditioning for spots as special agents in the new show — includes Chris O’Donnell, L L Cool J, Louise Lombard and Daniela Ruah, an American-born veteran of Portuguese telenovelas.“100 FEET” (Sci Fi Channel, 9 p.m. Sunday) is not the usual Sci Fi original movie: it began life as a theatrical film, written and directed by Eric Red (a writer of “The Hitcher” and “Near Dark”) and played the genre-festival circuit before being picked up for television. It stars Famke Janssen as a woman transferred from prison to house arrest, where an ankle bracelet limits her movements to the radius described in the title; that’s inconvenient, since the husband she killed in self-defense (Michael Paré) has returned to haunt her. The interesting cast includes Bobby Cannavale and the “Gossip Girl” pretty boy Ed Westwick.http://www.dvdsetshop.com

'Bones' season finale to feature guest appearance by Motley Crue. Discuss.
SPOILER ALERT! Fox has confirmed that Motley Crue will guest star on the May 14 season finale of Bones dvd, performing "Dr. Feelgood." This sounds like one of Booth's hallucinations to me, but maybe not. A corpse is found at the popular nightclub, The Lab, where the Crüe plays, and the team investigates with "Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) working together like never seen before." (How did Fox resist putting an exclamation point at the end of that sentence? Impressive.) Also guesting in the episode, Ryan O'Neal (Brennan's dad, Max) and Brendan Fehr (Booth's brother, Jared). What are your theories? Go. bones dvd

Stargate, Sanctuary nab 38 Leo nominations
The teams behind the productions of SCI FI Channel’s Stargate and Sanctuary landed an astounding 38 seperate nominations for the 2009 Leo Awards, to be held Saturday, May 9 in Vancouver, British Columbia.Stargate Atlantis dvd led the pack with an astounding 17 nominations, including Best Program, Best Direction (Robert C. Cooper’s “Vegas”), three screenwriting nods (“Remnants,” “The Shrine” and “The Queen”), Cinematography, Picture and Sound Editing, Costume and Production Design, Visual Effects, and Make-Up. In the actor categories, Jewel State is nominated for Lead Performance (Female) for “Tracker.”David Hewlett was originally nominated in the Lead Performance (Male) category for “The Shrine,” but reportedly removed himself from the running because he did not live in Canada — and thus would not qualify.Stargate: Continuum earned 11 Leo nominations in the film category, ranging from Best Director (Martin Wood) and Screenwriter (Brad Wright) to Cinematography, Picture and Sound Editing, Production and Costume Design, Visual Effects, and Lead Performances for Michael Shanks (“Daniel Jackson”) and Amanda Tapping (“Samantha Carter”).Finally, Stargate’s Friday night companion series Sanctuary earned 10 nominations for its freshman season, including Direction, Screenwriting, Picture Editing, Make-Up and Visual Effects. Tapping was nominated for her performance in the episode “Requiem,” along with Ryan Robbins (”Edward”), Christopher Heyerdahl (”Revelations, Part 2″), and guest stars Jonathan Young (”Revelations, Part 2″) and Gabrielle Rose (”Edward”).Stargate Atlantis dvd and Universe co-creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper will also be honored at the ceremony with a special Outstanding Achievement Award. The annual Leo Awards honor the best in British Columbian television and film production. The awards are a program of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences foundation of British Columbia. The Leos were founded in 1999, and were established to provide support and recognition for the work of film and television producers, writers, directors, performers and others. To put the nominations in perspective, it’s important to look back to the past. While Stargate has always received a handful of yearly nominations, the last time a Stargate production took home an award was in 2005, when Stargate SG-1 won a costuming award for “Moebius, Part 2″ and Stargate Atlantis dvd won a Visual Effects award for “The Eye.” Tapping also won for her acting performance in Season Eight’s “Threads.” Since that time, no Stargate production has taken home awards, as they’ve gone to other Vancouver-based series such as Smallville, Painkiller Jane, Flash Gordon, and more.Listed here are a full look at the nominations. GateWorld also extends congratulations to the cast and crew of Sanctuary, who have garnered ten nominations in their first year — including acting nominations for Stargate alumni Amanda Tapping, Christopher Heyerdahl and Ryan Robbins.

cooper:SUG has gay characters
Beware of minor SPOILERS for the upcoming episode “Life” in the report below. The third Stargate series will go where Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis DVD didn’t: It will have gay characters. Stargate Universe series creators Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright told fans during their stage panel at Creation Entertainment’s official Vancouver Stargate convention earlier this month.“There are at least one and potentially more gay characters on Universe,” Cooper said in answer to a fan’s question.Wright added, “There’s actually two.”One of those characters is Camille Wray, the I.O.A. representative on board the Destiny, new casting documents reveal. The character is played by actress Ming-Na.In the show’s seventh episode, “Life,” viewers will meet Wray’s long-time partner back on Earth, Sharon. The character is listed as a lead guest, and possibly recurring. Camille uses the Destiny’s long-range communications device to return home to Sharon for a brief respite.Stargate Atlantis did have a few gay characters itself, at least in the minds of the producers — though it never made it onto the screen. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has stated that character of Alicia Vega was written to be a lesbian (story). But after her introduction in the Season Five premiere, she was quickly killed off in just her second appearance (“Whispers”).Mallozzi also said that there was another character on Atlantis he always thought was gay, though the right time (read: not forced) to reveal it on screen never materialized. The decision to include gay characters on Universe was born from the desire to focus the show on its characters and their relationships with one another.“This goes towards our goal to make the characters on Universe as complex and complicated and realistic and identifiable as we can, to as many people as we can,” Cooper said. “And that’s not just a desire for ratings. That’s the desire to portray humanity, and make a show that is saying something about who we are.”Stargate Universe premieres this fall on SCI FI Channel in the U.S., Sky1 in the U.K. and SPACE in Canada! Tapping’s Sanctuary enters second season
Amanda Tapping’s hit new fantasy series Sanctuary has begun principal photography on its second season, SCI FI Channel announced today. The new season will premiere this fall on the U.S. cable network, and is expected to air alongside Stargate Universe.
The show has been shooting for about two weeks now, and the cast and crew were working on the second half of the two-part season opener when GateWorld visited the set last week. The premiere is being directed by Martin Wood.
Joining the cast for the second season is actress Agam Darshi, who played Novo in the recent Stargate Atlantis cheap dvd episode “Outsiders” and an Athosian in Season One’s “Suspicion,” according to IMDb. Darshi (who hails from Birmingham, U.K.) will play Kate Freelander, described by the network as “a swindler, con artist and thief who finds herself in an uneasy alliance with Dr. Magnus after her business relationship with the Cabal goes sour.”
Frequent Season One guest star Ryan Robbins — who played Genii leader Ladon Radim on Stargate Atlantis cheap dvd – joins the full-time cast as Henry Foss.
“There’s a level of confidence this year,” Robbins told GateWorld, “because the show has done so well. I think there’s a willingness to take some risks. Man, it’s action-packed this year. I love the scripts.”
The show also adds to its staff of writers this year, including Alan McCullough, who has moved over from Stargate Atlantis.
The cast also includes Christopher Heyerdahl (Stargate Atlantis’s “Todd” the Wraith), Robin Dunne, and Emilie Ullerup.
Sanctuary was created by former SG-1 scribe Damian Kindler, who also executive produces with Tapping and Wood. Season One writer-producer Sam Egan has left the show this year, and Andrea Gorfolova, Carrie Mudd and Keith Beedie are now listed as executive producers.

Weekly TV Wrap Up - April 16th, 2009
It’s Thursday and I hope that April 15th didn’t treat you too harshly yesterday. Whether it did or not, I’m still here to razz or rant on some stuff that’s happening in and around the tube.
Stargate Universe
As if this is a surprise to Stargate fans, but Stargate Universe will be having a few notable guest stars in the form of a few veterans reprising their Stargate SG-1 roles.
Yep, you read that right.
window.google_render_ad();
We’ll be seeing Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Gary Jones reprising their roles we’ve come to love over the years. Additonally, we’re going to see Christopher McDonald (U.S. senator Alan Armstrong), Janelle Monáe (plays herself. She and her band will perform) and Carlo Rota (Carl Strom, head of the International Oversight Advisory) will also make an appearance.
If this is anything like the way Stargate Atlantis 1-5 cheap dvd started, we’ll see them in one quick scene, making it an official Stargate send off. I can’t imagine anything else, unless there’s a holodeck on the Ancient’s ship.
Stargate Universe stars Robert Carlyle, Lou Diamond Phillips and Ming-Na and is set to premiere on SCI FI in October with a special two-hour episode.

The fourth and final day of Creation Entertainment’s annual official Stargate convention brought with it news on the upcoming Stargate Universe series in a special panel with the show’s creators, along with stage appearances by two fan favorites.
First up for the day was executive producer N. John Smith. Smith talked about several Stargate projects, noting that he feels Universe is “a fabulous new concept. I can’t wait for fans to see what’s been done.”
Per Smith, the third SG-1 film has been green-lit, although the start of production could be in a state of flux
“When we were shooting SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis 1-5 cheap dvd at the same time, it was a huge strain on all involved,” Smith said. “I think, so that we are able to provide a better product, we’ll probably try to begin production on it in the fall after we wrap filming on the first season [of Universe].”
“You never know, though,” Smith continued. “There could be a little bit of overlap.”
On the convention stage next were Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, who stopped in as special guests at the convention to conduct a panel on Stargate Universe and answer some of the burning questions fans have about the third series.
The two also talked about thoughts behind those one-word episode titles, the upcoming Atlantis and SG-1 movies, bloopers, changes to the Stargate Atlantis 1-5 cheap dvd leadership, how SGU is being shot, Stargate’s lack of recognition in Canada, and more.
Wright also announced that the new cut of “Children of the Gods” is finished and now with MGM and FOX — and when it arrives it will include an audio commentary with Wright and actor Richard Dean Anderson. The film will also be dedicated to Don S. Davis , who passed away last year.
Convention guests were next welcomed to an appearance by convention regular Michael Shanks.Within the first few minutes — and without actually saying the words — Shanks all but confirmed an appearance on Stargate Universe

Vancouver Convention Report: Thursday
Yesterday, Creation Entertainment’s annual Official Stargate convention in Vancouver kicked off in fine fashion, and GateWorld was there to cover it all!The day’s festivities kicked off with a visit by Valerie Halverson, lead costume designer for the Stargate franchise since Season Ten of SG-1. During her Q&A session with convention-goers, Halverson spoke of both the joys and challenges in costuming a franchise as diverse in styles as Stargate requires. She specifically mentioned issues such as finding wardrobe options that would conceal actress Rachel Luttrell’s (”Teyla Emmegan“) pregnancy during Season Four of Atlantis — scripts didn’t reflect her condition until she was already over five months pregnant in real life. She also acknowledged that it was a conscious decision for the main cast of Stargate Atlantis cheap dvd 1-5 to appear in more leather-based attire beginning in Season Four, as a way to make the costumes “more sexy” on-screen.Next on the stage was a “Working Actor in Vancouver” panel which included Fulvio Cecere, Kirby Morrow, Heather Doerkson, Jody Racicot, Michael Kopsa and Patrick Currie. Fulvio, who has appeared on both Stargate SG-1 and Battlestar Galactica, directly compared the production styles of the two series.“Stargate is a well-oiled machine,” Fulvio said. “It really is like working with family! It was the same experience on Battlestar, but with them it was more like a feature. With Stargate, we’d shoot eight or more pages in a day, but with Battlestar it might be only three or four. The crew would leave and it would just be us and the director. We’d discuss the shot we needed and thoroughly rehearse it, just like on a movie set.”The group panel was followed by an appearance by SG-1 actor and fan favorite Gary Jones (”Sgt. Walter Harriman“), who had the crowd in stitches as he discussed a variety of stories from his days on the series. One in-depth recollection involved his first day of shooting scenes with actor Beau Bridges (”General Landry“) at the beginning of Season Nine — and having director Peter DeLuise force him to do his line reads a second time in his best Captain Kirk impression. As reported previously, Jones also confirmed the news that both he and Richard Dean Anderson will be putting in appearances in episodes of Stargate Universe, set to premiere in the fall. The evening ended with an improv performance entitled “Starhole SG-1.5,” in which Jones (reprising his role as Harriman) and actor Dean Haglund (The X-Files, The Lone Gunmen) played various Stargate character roles in a brand-new adventure — and several convention guests were invited up to the stage to perform various roles. The fun and excitement continues tomorrow as the convention will see appearances by David Nykl (”Radek Zelenka“), Dan Shea ( stunt coordinator for SG-1), Connor Trinneer (”Michael“) and Teryl Rothery (”Dr. Janet Frasier“). Keep your browser locked to GateWorld as we continue to bring you the latest on all things Stargate throughout the convention weekend! stargate atlantis cheap dvd 1-5

Richard Dean Anderson will be on Stargate Universe
He led SG-1 through the gate for eight seasons, and helped launch Stargate Atlantis 1-5 cheap dvd five years ago. Now Richard Dean Anderson is set to bring Jack O’Neill back to Stargate with what sounds like multiple appearances on Stargate Universe.“Rick is doing episodes of Universe,” series co-creator Brad Wright told GateWorld exclusively today. “He was just here yesterday shooting an episode of Universe with us. So that relationship is always on-going, and it’s good to have him back.”The show’s fifth episode, “Earth,” is currently filming, and is likely one in which Anderson will appear. But will he help kick off the show by also appearing in the first episode, as he and Michael Shanksdid with Atlantis?Later the same day (today), former Stargate SG-1 1-10 dvd co-star Gary Jones ) appeared on stage at Creation Entertainment’s official Stargate convention in Vancouver, and told fans that he is appearing in an episode of SGU with Anderson. He noted that General O’Neill will have been promoted to 3-star general for the episode they filmed together.Jones didn’t specify which episode it was, but he also noted that he (Jones) was asked to appear in the SGU premiere, “Air.” So, if you’re keeping score at home, Jones should appear in “Air” and Anderson is likely for “Earth” — while Anderson is possible for “Air” and/or Jones is possible for “Earth.”Confused? To add to the speculation fun of fans attending this week’s Vancouver convention, part of Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping’s Sunday appearance has been moved to Saturday. According to reports from fans communicating with Creation, the reason given is that both actors have an early Monday morning call for filming. Whether that’s for Stargate Universe or not is still guesswork.Stick with GateWorld this week and through the weekend for more news from the Vancouver Stargate convention! When will Kim Bauer be coming back to 24 hours 1-6 dvd? And will it have anything to do with the bio-weapon Jack has been exposed to? — YongMATT: When I asked Kiefer Sutherland about the nature of Kim's latest encore (slated for mid-April), he said, "Something has happened to Jack, and it's he who asks for her — normally it's the other away around." Kiefer went on to call the father-daughter reunion "very human and real ... a part of the show I'm excited for the audience to see." So your theory sounds about right. Just don't expect the now-married Kim to have Pony Boy at her side; her Season 5 romance apparently didn't take. Are we ever going to see the Scavo twins on Desperate Housewives 1-4 cheap dvd again? I love those goofy bastards. — RachelMICKEY: No word on Dumb or Dumber, but if it's adolescent angst you're hankering for, get a load of this: Another Housewife will soon find herself playing surrogate mom to a feisty, spoiled teen diva who breaks the rules to get what she wants. Sound familiar?I really enjoyed Season 1 of Leverage, and I'm glad it's coming back so soon. Is it safe to assume the team's staying together? — FrankTIM: Yes, they'll all be back for Season 2 (premiering in July), but with a bit of a role reversal. Instead of Nate holding the team together, his band of thieves will have to keep him from leaving. They'll also move their headquarters to his loft in Boston, and meet clients at the bar downstairs — which could be an issue. As you'll recall from Season 1, Nate is still struggling to get his drinking under control. Did Lost 1-3 cheap dvd Sayid actually kill teenage Ben? If so, does that mean adult Ben will now "disappear"? — ConnieMATT: Already we have heard from Young Ben (aka Sterling Beaumon, full Q&A here) on the matter. Now, let's check in with Adult Ben's portrayer. "Although it appears that the situation is dire, it would be wrong to count Ben out," the deliciously cryptic Michael Emerson tells the Buzz. "Remember that the man we know as Ben has a destiny, and that a conventional life is insignificant when compared to the life of the Island." Will we see The Office 1-2 cheap dvd Jim and Pam get married this season, or at least hear something about their wedding plans? — SarahMICKEY: Jim and Pam won't tie the knot until the fall, I hear, mostly because Pam's new job sitch will complicate their courtship. In the meantime, ask yourself this question: What would happen to this twosome if Pam becomes more successful than Jim? Why was Life on Mars 1-2 cheap dvd cancelled? Ratings? If so, how bad were they? — ClemTIM: Mars averaged between 5 million and 6 million viewers, placing last in its time slot among the 18-49 demo that rules television. "Technically, there is the 'make-good number,' which they promise the advertiser they're going to make," executive producer Scott Rosenberg says. "We were unfortunately coming in underneath ours." You can click here for more of the interview, which says how much closure fans can expect. Or, you can refuse to accept the end and sign this petition calling for another season. What's ahead for the Grey sisters on Grey's Anatomy 1-3 cheap dvd? — KellyMATT: You know how when sad dad Thatcher Grey swings by Seattle Grace, he almost always stirs up some sort of trouble, angst and/or agita? (My God, he's a drag.) Amazingly, his April 30 visit will bring Meredith and Lexie closer together ... as they collude to murder him and hide the body. OK, the back half of that sentence was wishful thinking on my part (no offense, Jeff Perry).Christina Applegate has said that ABC will only air six episodes of Samantha Who? Please tell me that Ugly Betty chea dvd will be back after that. That show was getting really good! — JoyceMICKEY: Applegate told us that Samantha's spring run could be extended by five episodes if the ratings for the first six (which boast "really big things between Samantha and Todd") are strong enough. It's unclear how such a scenario affects Betty, which is set to reclaim its time slot on May 7. What is clear is that I would be a more likely sex addict than Betty's new beau, Matt. (If you know me or have seen any of my various online dating profiles — "Caring, Clean, Blue-Eyed Virgo Wants to Share a Box of Kashi GoLean Crunch and a Fifth of Gin with YOU!" — you will realize that this is funny.)Is The Cleaner dvd with Benjamin Bratt ever coming back? — DonnaTIM: A&E's The Cleaner will return sometime this summer, and we can tell you exclusively that one episode focuses heavily on fathers, sons, and substance abuse. Bratt's William Banks tries to spend a weekend with his son, Ben, but his father (Raymond J. Barry, aka Lost's Ray Shephard) enlists him to help an alcoholic pal (guest star Joe Don Baker). We then meet a widower (Stargate: Atlantis' Michael Beach) whose eldest boy has just died in war and whose younger son, played by Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris), bonds with Ben over their struggling dads. You said in a recent Mega Minute that One Tree Hill's 1-6 cheap dvd Nathan gets an offer to play basketball in Europe. Please say he doesn't accept! I need my "Naley" intact. — BessMATT: Maybe, just maybe, the Scotts' marriage will dodge that bullet if Nathan instead gets recruited by a very local NBA team — which this photo seems to suggest. Then again, those Tree Hill kids have always been big dreamers. You guys have got to give it to me straight: Is The Game canceled? This waiting for a decision is driving me bonkers. — NatalieMICKEY: You're not the only one wondering, Natalie. While there won't be an official announcement until the May 21 upfronts, and though the ratings aren't strong (even by CW standards), a source tells me The Game's chances for another season are actually better than they were a few weeks ago.Any scoop on Harper's Island? Have you seen the previews and was it any good? — MaryMATT: Given my affinity for slasher films, the first hour of CBS' limited-run series pretty much met my expectations — right down to a pretty nifty (and grisly, for network TV) end-of-episode cleaving. For others interested in visiting the Island, I strongly suggest studying CBS' primer on each character/suspect before sitting down for the April 9 premiere, which is surprisingly light on heavy-handed exposition.I heard there's going to be a suicide on House. Please tell me it's Thirteen! — RoseMICKEY: OK, fine, it's Thirteen. Are you happy now? [Editor's note: It's April 1.] Tim's Mega Rave: Denis Leary has always kind of bugged me, and I didn't watch the first four seasons of Rescue Me. But the first episodes of the fifth season, which debuts April 7, are spectacular. Leary's great, Michael J. Fox is a welcome addition to the cast, and the first hour features a fire at a fireworks factory. What's not to like? Mickey's Mini Rant: The Office's Jim Halpert has lost his mojo, and it ain't pretty. Not only does the new boss hate him, but his once-subtle gift for trickery has been replaced by bombastic desperation. (A tuxedo in the office — really?) No wonder Pam doesn't want to work with him anymore.Matt's Micro Riff: CBS' How I Hid Your Pregnancy amuses me.Reader Quote of the Week: "Please for the love of god, kill Nate. If [Gossip Girl cheap dvd 1-7 is] gonna jump the shark, the least they could do is have him die in a freak hair straightening accident." (asho902, weighing in on Gossip Girl's flirtation with the Shark)

Walsh: 'Bones,' 'Graves' have forensics-based tales

Two recent crime novels use forensics as an important part of their plots - but go in entirely different directions. One is more cerebral while the other is action-packed.• "Bones 1-4 dvd" by best-selling author Jefferson Bass (William Morrow, $24.99) is the fourth in his popular series starring Dr. Bill Brockton. He's the forensic anthropologist in charge of University of Tennessee's Body Farm, which uses corpses to assist in the determination of unusual causes of death.AdvertisementOAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1');The "guy who watches the bodies rot" and his graduate assistant are called to investigate when a body is found frozen in a swimming pool behind a dilapidated hotel. The victim is Dr. Leonard Novak, a highly respected physicist who was deeply involved in the Manhattan Project in nearby Oak Ridge, Tenn., during World War II.But Novak didn't die by drowning, his death was from specific radioactive poisoning. There are a few intense forensic scenes with unpredictable results; Novak's semi-lucid ex-wife Beatrice, offers captivating oral recollections.Bass, the pseudonym of the writing team of Dr. Bill Bass and Jon Jefferson, deftly combines forensics and history, linking Novak's death to another which was concealed years earlier as the atomic energy project drew to a close. It's probably best to read the three earlier books in the series to enjoy the character development; this one is significantly thought provoking before real action takes place at the end.• "Scattered Graves" by Beverly Connor (Obsidian, $7.99) is exactly the opposite - it's jam-packed with frenzied action throughout.Diane Fallon, the head of the crime lab at the River Trail Museum of Natural History, is frustrated when Spencer Jeffries, the new mayor of Rosewood, Ga., decides to replace her.Officially, forensic anthropologist Fallon is still in charge, as the crime lab is controlled by the museum, not the town. But Fallon's got a lot more trouble, particularly when a nasty cop attacks and tries to kill her.Soon the body count rises and her friend, the former chief of detectives, is the prime suspect. This is the fifth in her highly entertaining series; it works well on a number of levels. Make no bones about it: this case becomes considerably more complicated as she discovers a deadly conspiracy.Ray Walsh, owner of East Lansing's Curious Book Shop, has reviewed crime novels and noir thrillers regularly since 1987. bones 1-4 dvd

The SCIFI Channel Talks SYFY
The SCIFI Channel’s big announcement of its rebranding has been an extremely controversial decision in the eyes of fans of the network. The timing felt wrong as the announcement came as the network’s most successful science fiction series, Battlestar Galactica, comes to an end. Was the finale of BSG the last hoorah for science fiction fans that actually appreciate having a network dedicated to the genre they love? Well, the answer is yes and no. Yes, the network is changing and will be expanding its programming but at the same time there are several big science fiction shows launching on the network so there will still be plenty for fans to sink their teeth in to. The question is; what does the future truly hold for the network? I was invited to sit in on conference call and ask the tough questions of SCIFI Channel president Dave Howe:In previous interactions with Dave Howe, I’ve found him to be an open and honest person and right away he says that this interview session should be “no holds barred”. The first obvious thing everyone on the call wanted to know was why the name and how did it come about. Howe also commented just a bit on how the new name is so closely related to another popular website, SCYFY Portal. “…we’ve been doing - we’ve been actively working on this brand evolution for the last two years. And we’ve explored a lot of name options. And I think at the point at which there are any short list of names the first thing we do obviously is look at the URLs and look at whether any of the names are trademark protectable. And I think once we looked at alternative names and we also looked at whether there was a way of taking ownership of our existing name through, you know, an addition of extra letters or changing the order of the letters I think once we settled on Syfy it became apparent to us that, you know, the Syfy Portal existed. And, you know, we haven’t, you know, we haven’t not commented on that directly. And that’s a point of fact that Syfy Portal is now (off our analog).”“I think the honest answer to that actually is that we didn’t come up with a name that we liked any better than what we’ve gone with which was Syfy. Naming is an incredibly tough exercise. And, you know, I’ve been at SciFi for eight years, I’ve been in the TV business, you know, a marketing head for about 20 years. And trust me, the hardest and toughest thing to ever get to is a name that everybody likes; it’s incredibly subjective. It’s never going to solve all of life’s problems for you. There will always be things that it does communicate, things that it doesn’t communicate. But at the end of the day, you know, as you rightly said, people watch content, people watch shows. And, you know, they’re not going to be drawn to something or alienated from something necessarily just because of the name. So, you know, we didn’t come up with a name - a short listed name that we liked. And just to your point about Syfy Portal, the other thing actually which I forgot - the other point which I forgot to make is we were able to secure syfy.com before we even entered into a conversation with Syfy Portal. So although, you know, that name was taken in relation to Syfy Portal, syfy.com was available and we secured that and very early on this process.”In the early days of the SCIFI Channel, Isaac Asimov, a science fiction maven gave his approval to the name of the network. Howe discusses whether Asimov would approve this change in the name: “…“I think what we want to do is move to a position where we can earn, you know the broad sci-fi fantasy landscape and include in there fantasy and paranormal and supernatural and super hero and, you know, some of those speculative action and adventure. I think that’s absolutely the object of this exercise so it’s about how do we embrace the broader sci-fi fantasy landscape as opposed to how do we escape from our past? That isn’t the object of this exercise.”“…if you look at - if you look at the range and diversity of our programming on air, you know, we still have Star Trek on air, we have still have Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Atlantis 1-5 dvd , soon to become Stargate Universe.”“But alongside that there’s Eureka, you know, we’re launching Warehouse 13, somebody earlier mentioned Chase, Estate of Panic, you know, Who Wants to be a Superhero. You know, we have a very broad range of content and the challenge that we have is if you talk to consumers who don’t watch our channel the expectation and the anticipation around when they do surf up the dials to SciFi is that all they’ll find there is Star Trek.”“And clearly that isn’t something from a branding perspective and from a future perspective that enables us to do what we want to do which is becoming inclusive and bring more people in who we know will enjoy a broader range of shows and hopefully we can kind of cross sell and cross promote and cross convert to other shows once they come to us.”“But the challenge for us is if they don’t think that space opera is for them then they’re not going to come.”Next ,Howe quite defensively discusses all of the negativity online regarding the name change. He makes the obvious comment that people just hate change but he uses a valid reference:“Yes, we are tracking it. And, you know, we’re reading all of the message boards and Twitter and we’ve got people basically monitoring it all. And, you know, I get like a summary of what people are saying. And I’m not, you know, I’m not surprised at all by the comments that we’re hearing. I mean I think the, you know, the points I would make is that none of us particularly like change; none of us like the idea of a new name.”“I mean a lot of new names out there were not particularly well received when they were announced. I mean, Nintendo Wii was not exactly great and Tivo and all the rest of those names. I think the reason that we wanted to do this conference call today is because the thing that - the thing that I want to say directly and I think I want to really reinforce and really emphasize and the thing that disturbs me most about some of the comments, but if I’m honest didn’t really surprise me, is that this is not about abandoning our past, this is not about alienating our existing core viewers because frankly, you know, we are still the sci-fi fantasy channel and we’ll continue to be so.”“And this is absolutely about embracing our heritage and embracing our future and figuring out how we can bring even more people into the camp. And, you know, the, you know, the thing that I think disturbs us most was people, you know, as we expected saying well this is just another, you know, opportunity to put more (ECW) on our air or this is another opportunity to do even more reality.”“That isn’t true. And, you know, recent announcements, you know, we picked up Caprica, we’re bringing in Caprica and it’ll launch in the New Year. We picked up Stargate Universe, you know, the next exciting chapter of, you know, the longest running space opera I think in, you know, TV history.”“You know, this isn’t about, you know, retrenching, this is about absolutely embracing the totality of not just our core audience but actually a new audience in the future.”“And actually the other point I would make is when we - which was actually very entertaining is when - of course when we announced that we were reimagining Battlestar Galactica that was not expected (greeted) with delight by the fans. And, you know, we get that.”“I think what it does do and actually in all that testing we were sort of surprised and actually it confirmed what we wanted to do here just this new name makes more sense of our existing range of programming. It makes more sense if you put this brand on a Ghost Hunters or a Destination Truth or Eureka because it doesn’t - because it doesn’t scream so loudly the science fiction genre it makes more sense for me, you know, a program range perspective.”“So we were very excited to hear that. So, you know, we do think it sort of gives us, you know, the best of both worlds. It gives us - it keeps our heritage and it enables us to broaden and become more inclusive and create a sense that this is a unique brand name that you can expect a broader range of, you know, what we’re calling imagination-based entertainment which is going to be everything from, you know, Caprica and Stargate Universe to Warehouse 13 to Eureka, you know, to the kind of broad fun human relatable aspect of the genre that, you know, we really want to embrace.”The process, having taken over two years seems to have been fairly arduous. Howe shares some of the thought and process that went behind picking SyFy as the new brand:“… we did think maybe we’ll do this at Comic-Con actually with a fun panel. We might share the short list of names. I mean I think the conversation that we’re having today and the, you know, the feeding frenzy in the chat rooms and online etcetera would probably be considerably greater if we changed the name completely if I’m honest.”“But naming is incredibly difficult. And, you know, if you think of, you know, if you look at brands that launch now on the whole new brands have to have a name which is completely made up so it will be a word that you’ve never seen before.”“You know, you see this particularly, you know, with drugs, you look at a name like, you know, Celebrex or Viagra or Cialis, any of these drugs you have to invent a word that doesn’t exist and you have to do that because clearly it’s incredibly critical for you to secure the URL.”“So any real word is going to be completely ruled out from the trademark perspective not just in the US but probably anywhere in the world and from a URL perspective. So straight away you’re confined by having to invent a word.”“So that’s the first challenge and then once you’ve invented a bunch of words, you know, what you have to look at is the pros and cons of that word. So, you know, the word may communicate something which you think is good but then it may communicate something which is kind of less good or is misleading or takes you in a direction that you don’t want to go in or ultimately takes you back to where you were.”“And in lots of respects some of the short listed names that we came up with actually didn’t really move us any further forward than where we are now with Syfy.”“And, you know, there’s something which - there’s something about the letter form in particular that we believe and we’ve had this confirmed in our testing makes the logo very accessible and relatable, the symmetry of it, the letter forms of the two Ys together with the S and F which are very rounded.”“We actually see that yes there is a word; yes you could argue it’s a misspelled SciFi but actually it’s a new word. It’s a new word and actually it’s a logo in itself. Part of the exercise that we went through is we wanted obviously to let go of the Saturn logo but actually to do that we needed to have a letter form which in and of itself from a design perspective was unique and brandable and trademark ownable.”“I think the - it’s a word that no one’s seen before. I think, you know, smart people who know sci-fi get it; people who don’t just look at it and think actually it’s kind of interesting, it’s cool and contemporary. You know, a lot of people in the testing kind of said well if I was going to text sci-fi that’s how I’d spell it.”“So it delivers quite a lot of things that, you know, we like and we think will be, you know, quite powerful in the future. Just actually to give you an example of a name that actually we did test and I can tell you what this name is because this was a name that is not trademarkable and there’s no way we would have got the URL or even been able to trademark it I think in any territory and that’s a name - the other name that we put into testing was Beyond.”“So I think we tested three things: We tested - initially and this has been going on for maybe a year we tested SFC, which is the obvious contraction from SciFi Channel which has been knocking around for probably 10 years. And that’s what a lot of other networks have done, TNN, TNT, CNN; all of those are contractions - TLC - all of those are contractions of longer names. We tested that.”“We tested where we are now. We tested Syfy and we tested Beyond. And what was interesting about Beyond is to the point I was making earlier, it solved some of the problems; it doesn’t solve all of them. So Beyond did create a sense of well it’s about the future, it’s about something which is, you know, far and away beyond me and over my head. And maybe not something that I could relate to that, you know, connected with my life as it is now.”“So you can, you know, just in that example alone you can see some of the complexities and some of the challenges of any naming exercise which is why, you know, having a made up name which Syfy is, is more open and enables you to kind of give it the perceptions and the kind of values that you want it to have as opposed to a real word that comes with its own, you know, set of expectations based on the meaning of that word.”As far as future expansion of the network the obvious direction, due to the success of sites like Hulu, is to begin crafting more product for the internet. Dave discusses a bit of their web strategy:“…when the economics are there we really do want to embrace Webisodes. I mean we’ve done two rounds of Battlestar, I think we did some early Eureka - three rounds of Battlestar - somebody is holding up three fingers at me.”“This is absolutely something we want to do more of. And I think as we figure out how to monetize our digital sites and figure out how to produce scripted shows in particular because as you can imagine, you know, they’re extremely expensive to produce this kind of stuff. That’s something that we absolutely want to do more of.”The network is even looking into doing some completely original web show: “…we have under (Craig Engler) we have a bunch of TV series in development so (Craig) works very closely with (Mark Stern) who runs our on air development team over in LA. And yes every - literally every single pitch that comes in we work on. Sometimes we take TV pitches and actually have kind of moved them over to the digital development team because we think actually they might be a better place to start to kind of germinate the idea online and then cross over to (either) back to TV.”“But I think, you know, the - what we want to get to in the future and that’s part of this rebrand is how do we become more platform-agnostic because to us, you know, the TV screen is clearly important but, you know, in this day and age a screen is a screen is a screen. And I think certainly with convergence and, you know, with the fact that you can watch TV series on Xbox and Playstation and all the rest of it the notion of a TV show is somewhat anachronistic.”“I think, you know, we need to get to a point where we create things - stories and characters and intellectual property that can start on any platform and migrate to another.”Last year, the network announced that they were working with a gaming company to launch a television series simultaneously with an MMORPG. The game would influence the show and vice versa so subscribers to the game might actually have some influence on the TV series. This sounded like it could be the ultimate in interactive TV or something that could completely implode. Either way, I was excited for the show, then everything went quiet. Dave actually offers some updates on this project. He says they are looking at a launch window of late 2010 or 2011.“We’ve hired a writer. We’re getting dangerously close to announcing a title. And they’re at the script development stage in terms of the TV pilot.”“So I think within two, three months we’ll announce some pretty exciting stuff about, you know, the setting and some of the characters. But obviously the game - and you will know this, you know, MMOG games are incredibly deep and incredibly expansive.”“So, you know, they need to start work on it, you know, two, three years out in order to create that sort of incredibly rich world. And that’s kind of what they’ve been working on. So alongside that, you know, we have to kind of figure out how to create some of the core elements of that game and turn them into a TV series. So it’s a - no one’s really attempted this before so it’s really quite exciting watching it unfold.”So, there you have it, straightforward and open as always Dave Howe is working hard to try and sell this new brand to everyone, hardcore fans and mainstream viewers alike. This conversation reveals that he network does still plan to do offbeat and science fiction related programming. As long as we get something like Eureka rather than another Law and Order or CSI, it’s hard to complain. Maybe this rebranding means some horror shows and fantasy shows will appear on the network. If so, that’s a good thing. I honestly always wondered why Legend of the Seeker didn’t end up on SCIFI. Now, with this rebranding maybe it could. The scariest part of all of this is the increase in reality shows. Those kinds of series are cheap to make and generally do well with the mainstream audience, the new viewers that the network is hoping to get. In the end if you have three or four shows on the network that you like such as Stargate, Eureka, Sanctuary, and possibly one of the new series and those shows get paid for by some reality programming is that such a bad thing? Only time will tell. It all starts July 7th when the new branding takes over the network. news about Stargate Atlantis 1-5 dvd

Bones 1-5 DVD Gets a 'Toon-Up: Boreanaz and "Stewie" Talk Smack
As Bones' Booth ponders becoming a family man, he'll get a visit from Family Guy's Stewie, in a "crossover" episode slated to air May 7.The set-up for this unusual merger of genres: When Bones' Brennan asks Booth to father her a child, the normally nonplussed federal agent becomes consumed by the prospect of procreating. That, coupled with an undiagnosed health issue Booth is suffering from, sets the stage for a visit from diabolical Stewie, who tenders advice to the prospective pop.Asked about his Bones 1-5 DVD drop-by, Stewie said in a statement, "Oh, have you seen it? Was I good? Because I heard they said I was amazing and they want me to replace Emily [Deschanel]. But that's just a rumor."Boreanaz, in turn, says that Bones' wisecracking guest star "was good during the actual scenes ... but between takes he literally vanished — nowhere to be seen."I guess it's true that Brits and cartoons tend to be standoffish," adds Boreanaz. "Or maybe it was a Method thing, I don't know."What's your honest take, Bones 1-5 DVD backers, on this super-strange crossover?
